Northstars Earn First Point, Still Looking For First Win Following Showcase

The Norman Northstars are still in search of their first win after dropping three games over the weekend during the Manitoba Midget AAA showcase in Portage.

 

The NorMan side opened up the showcase Friday, dropping a 5-2 to the Central Plains Capitals.

 

Saturday saw the Northstars pick up their first point of the season, as they came close in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings.

 

The Norman Northstars wrapped up the showcase yesterday, falling 8-5 to the Parkland Rangers.

 

The team will host the Interlake Lightning at the Thompson Regional Community Centre this coming Friday and Saturday.

Flin Flon Falls On Weekend 5-2

The Flin Flon Bombers dropped both of their weekend road games by a score of 5-2.

 

They opened up against the Ice Wolves on Friday night before falling to the Battlefords North Stars on Saturday.

 

The Bombers will return home to the Whitney Forum to face the Red Wings and Hounds this coming weekend.

Blizzard Drop Pair Of Games Down South

The OCN Blizzard are looking to bounce back after a disappointing weekend.

 

The Blizzard dropped a close one in Winnipeg to the Blues Saturday night, 6-5 in overtime. Five different players scored for OCN, while Levi Cudmore lead the way for Winnipeg with four goals.

 

The Blizzard had a night to forget last night as they were stomped 7-0 by the Steinbach Pistons.

 

OCN is in action on Wednesday when they welcome the Virden Oil Capitals to the GLMC.

Bombers Defence No Where To Be Found Over Weekend

The Flin Flon Bombers had defencive woes over the weekend, allowing a combinded 14 goals against the Weyburn Red Wings and Estevan Bruins.

 

Friday night saw the Red Wings trounce the Bombers 7-4 at Crescent Point Place in Weyburn before Estevan stomped Flin Flon 7-3. Nate Hooper had a goal and two assists in the game against the Bruins.

 

The Bombers will hope to improve their fortunes Friday as they head to La Ronge.

OCN Blizzard Split Weekend Series In Virden

The OCN Blizzard were in Virden over the weekend where they split a weekend series with the Oil Capitals.

 

Lantz Hiebert potted his fourth of the season to give the Blizzard an early first period lead, but it wasn't enough as Virden had the game tied by the end of the second. Oil Capitals forward Ben Dalke potting the game winner early into a penalty-riddled third period. The final score was 6-4.

 

OCN would respond in the Saturday affair, dropping the Capitals 4-1. Daniel Chartrand led the way for the Blizzard with a goal and an assist.

 

The OCN Blizzard currently sit second in the MJHL, only behind the Steinbach Pistons.

Northstars Fall To 0-7 On The Season With Second Loss To Yellowhead

The Norman Northstars are still looking for their first win of the 2017/2018 season after dropping both games in their weekend series with the Yellowhead Chiefs.

 

The NorMan squad allowed three first period goals, including two in the opening minute, and just couldn't claw their way back into the game. Albert Berard and Mitchell Reid would increase the Northstars goal totals from the previous night, but it wasn't enough.

 

Brian Mentuck lead the way for the Chiefs with a goal and two assists for three points, while Chad Nychuk, Owen Wareham, Logan Tanner and Tanner Dutcawich all had multi-point nights.

 

The Northstars next game is scheduled for Friday against the Central Plains Capitals. Their next home game is on October 27th against the Interlake Lightning.

A Night To Forget For The Northstars

Last night was one to forget for the Norman Northstars.

 

The NorMan squad gave up five first period goals to last seasons' runner up, including a hattrick to Logan Wotton and two short handed markers as the Yellowhoead Chiefs walked away with an easy 7-1 victory in the first of two games this weekend. Starting goaltender Braedin Melsted was pulled after allowing three goals in the first nine minutes.

 

Former Northstar Jeremy Dutcawich picked up the win for Chiefs. The Flin Flon, MB native stopped 33 of 34 shots to pick up his second win of the season. 

 

Henry Muchikekwanape had the lone goal for the Northstars, with Lance Bobesko and Jerome Linklater picking up the assists. 

 

Linklater skated away with forward of the game honours for the NorMan side, while Jordan Pfoh was named defender of the game. 

 

The Northstars will look for their first win of the season again tonight as they wrap up their weekend series with the Chiefs. Puck drop is at 7:30. 

Wheat Kings Drop Pair Of Weekend Games

The Wheaties had a weekend to forget.

 

The Major Junior squad from Brandon dropped Friday evening’s gameto the Red Deer Rebels before falling to Swift Current on Saturday.

 

The Firday game saw the Wheat Kings fourth-year defenceman Kale Clague add three helpers as Brandon fell 5-4 to the Rebels in the shootout.

 

Saturday saw the Wheaties welcome the Swift Current Broncos to Westman Place. The Broncos scored early and often, and ended the first period with a 5-0 lead. They would go on to win 7-2.

 

The Wheat Kings currently sit fifth in the WHL's east division.

Bombers Offence Drop 12 Goals Over Two Games

The Flin Flon Bombers are back in the win column after sweeping the Melville Millionaires in a pair of games over the weekend.

 

The Bombers beat the Millionaires 5-2 on Friday night at the Whitney Forum. Four players had a pair of points for Flin Flon, who were backed by Brenden Newton's third win of the season in net.

 

Saturday saw the Bombers offence improve on their effort from the previous night, shutting out Melville 7-0. The game featured seven different Flin Flon players scoring,  Ben Lanfermann putting up four points, and Daylan Marchi adding three helpers. Brenden Newton stopped all 23 shots that he faced for the shutout.

Blizzard Drop 2 Of 3 On Weekend Road Trip

The OCN Blizzard dropped two of three over the weekend.

 

The Blizzard opened the weekend in Selkirk, playing back-to-back games Friday and Saturday night. The series-opener ended early in overtime as Nat Halvorsen potting his second of the season for the Steelers who came out on top 5-4.

 

OCN would skate away with a 5-4 win in the Saturday affair. Anthony Keeper and Thomas Hansell would lead the way for the Blizzard, scoring two goals a peice. Dorian Laganiere picked up his fourth win of the season.

 

The Blizzard then travelled to Steinbach to take on the Pistons in a Sunday night affair. It was a night to forget for the side from OCN as Braden Purtill, who spend parts of four seasons in the WHL with the Tri-City Americans and Red Deer Rebels, scored four en route to a 5-0 win for the Pistons.

 

The Blizzard next play Friday as they host the Winnipeg Blues at the G.L.M.C.

Trojan Girls Win Zones

The R.D.P.C. Trojan girls' soccer team are Zone XI champions.

 

The girls and boys' sides travelled to Flin Flon over the weekend to compete in the tournament, and the girls came away with the Zone title, and will play in the MHSAA Provincial Soccer Championships from October 13th to 14th in Niverville, MB.

 

The girls beat the Hapnot Kopper Kweens 1-0 in the final. Tressa McDonald scored the lone goal for the R.D.P.C. side, while Dennita Cameron kept a clean sheet in net. The team finished the weekend with an impressive 22 goals scored for without allowing a single ball into their own net. 

 

The boys' squad did not fair as well as their female counterparts, falling in the semifinals 2-1 to Hapnot. Seongyeon Wi scored the goal for the Trojans. 

 

 

Northstars Drop Third Straight, Fall To 0-3

The Norman Northstars are heading back north after a disapointing start to the season. 

 

The NorMan squad dropped this afternoon's game in Kenora 3-0 to the Thistles. Kenora scored once in the opening frame before potting two in the second. Cooper Witherspoon had a two goal afternoon for the Thistles. The final shot count was 36-19 in favour of Kenora.

 

The Northstars now focus their attention on the Parkland Rangers, who will be in Thompson for a pair of games this coming Friday and Saturday. 

 

Both games will be played at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena in the T.R.C.C. starting at 7:30pm. The Friday night game can be heard live on 102.9 CHTM. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Blue Jays Finish Disappointing Season With Win Over Playoff-Bound Yankees

The Toronto Blue Jays wrapped up their 2017 season earlier this afternoon in New York, where they beat the playoff-bound Yankees 2-1.

 

Toronto jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jose Bautista. The 36-year-old was playing in what might possibly have been his last game in a Blue Jays uniform. 

 

Ryan Goins would ground out in the top of the 8th inning to drive in the game-winning run. 

 

Brett Anderson got the start for the Jays, and came away with a no-decision after five innings of three-hit ball. He struck out three. Reliever Danny Barnes picked up the win for Toronto and Roberto Osuna picked up his career-best 39th save of the season.

 

The Toronto Blue Jays finished the season with a record of 76-86, good enough for fourth place in the American League East division. They will not make the playoffs for the first time in three years.
