CFL asking federal government for up to $150 million in financial assistance

The Canadian Football League is asking the federal government for up to $150 million in financial assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie told The Canadian Press on Tuesday that the league's proposal involves three phases: $30 million now to manage the impact the novel coronavirus outbreak has had on league business; additional assistance for an abbreviated regular season; and up to another $120 million in the event of a lost 2020 campaign.

The CFL hasn't given up on staging a 2020 season but it has postponed the start of training camps - which were to open next month.

It has also and pushed back the beginning of the regular season - which was scheduled to begin June 11 - to early July, at the earliest.

Many provincial governments already have said there will not be sports events with large crowds this summer.

The Grey Cup is scheduled for Nov. 22 in Regina.

Hlinka Gretzky Cup men's hockey tournament cancelled because of COVID-19

The Hlinka Gretzky Cup, a tournament featuring the world's top under-18 male hockey players, has been cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The eight-country tournament was scheduled for Aug. 3-8 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.

Many players don't participate in the International Ice Hockey Federation's men's world under-18 championship in April because it conflicts with playoffs in their respective leagues, so the Hlinka Gretzky Cup is an important tournament for NHL scouts.

Canada has won 10 of the last 12 tournaments, but fell 3-2 to Russia in last year's final in Breclav, Czech Republic.

Formerly the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament co-hosted by Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Hockey Canada entered into a revenue-sharing arrangement with those hockey federations to rebrand the tournament and bring it to Canada in 2018, 2020 and 2022.

Edmonton and Red Deer are also the host cities of the 2021 world under-20 men's championship scheduled to open December 26.

PGA Championship delaying ticket sales for 2021

The 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island's Ocean Course is delaying the start of ticket sales until August.

Tickets were originally set to go on sale to those who registered online in May.

Instead, PGA Championship tournament director Scott Reid said that with the world grappling with the coronavirus pandemic it was not appropriate to ask potential spectators to make purchasing decisions at this time.

The tournament said the 2021 event remains set for its May dates.

This year's PGA Championship in San Francisco was moved from its original dates next month to early August.

Knights of Columbus Track Meet Cancelled for 2020

The Knights of Columbus Indoor Games has officially been cancelled for this year.

Originally slated for earlier in April, the annual track and field meet was put on hold amid COVID-19 social distancing protocols and school closures.

Mario Leclerc with the Knights of Columbus, told Arctic Radio news yesterday that the event will return sometime in April of 2021.

The meet features track and field events where grade 4 to 8 students from Thompson’s elementary schools compete to claim the top prize and bragging rights for the next year.

Sport Manitoba announces Postponement of Manitoba Games

To keep Manitobans safe and reduce the spread of COVID-19, Sport Manitoba and the Dauphin Host Society have announced that the Manitoba Games powered by Manitoba Hydro that were set to take place from August 9–15, 2020, have been postponed and will take place next summer in Dauphin from July 11–17, 2021.

Alberta Premier says NHL considering Edmonton as hub site to finish regular season

Alberta premier Jason Kenney says the NHL is considering Edmonton as a possible hub site to complete regular season.

He says his recent conversation with Commisioner Gary Bettman was very general and did not include a formal proposal of any kind.

Bettman told Sportsnet that one scenario the league is looking at would see four N-H-L arenas play host to three games per day without fans.

The regular season was paused on March 12th with 189 games remaining because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
