R.D. Parker JuniorVolleyball Teams in Action this Weekend

The RD Parker Collegiate Junior Varsity Boys and Girls Volleyball teams are in Winnipeg this weekend to compete in the 2022 John Taylor Collegiate Piper Classic.

 

The tournament takes place today and tomorrow.  Check for results on the RDPC Athletics Social Media pages or go to M-H-S-A-A dot CA.

The Ottawa Senators shoot for their fifth win in seven games as they host the Minnesota Wild tonight. The Senators are led by captain Brady Tkachuk, who's off to a hot start with five goals and five assists in six contests.     Elsewhere tonight, Montreal is in Buffalo, Edmonton visits Chicago, Winnipeg is at Los Angeles, Toronto's road trip continues in San Jose and Vancouver visits Seattle .

Montreal's Leylah Fernandez and Vancouver's Rebecca Marino will meet in an All-Canadian quarterfinal at a tennis tournament in Tampico,  Mexico. The third-seeded Fernandez enters having won consecutive matches in straight sets.

The undefeated Philadelphia Eagles have acquired three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Quinn from the Chicago Bears. Chicago gets a fourth-round pick in 2023 in return. Quinn set a Bears record last season with 18-and-a-half sacks, but has just one this year.

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has proclaimed himself “ready to roll” despite a lingering hamstring injury ahead of Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London. Wilson was a limited participant at practice yesterday and was held out of Sunday's 16-9 loss to the New York Jets because of a pulled hamstring.

 

Qatar says it will drop most of its coronavirus restrictions beginning November 1st, just before it hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar's Health Ministry has announced COVID test results would not be required for those flying into the country. The country also dropped a requirement to register for the country's contract-tracing app.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is facing criticism after telling gay soccer fans heading to the World Cup in Qatar that they should show some “compromise” and “be respectful of the host nation.” The comments were quickly disavowed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's office. A senior figure in the opposition Labour party called them “shockingly tone deaf.” Homosexual activity is criminalized in Qatar.

The Toronto Raptors will shoot for their second straight win as they host the Philadelphia 76ers tonight. It's the first time the teams have met since the Sixers eliminated the Raptors in the first round of last season's N-B-A playoffs. Toronto is dealing with injuries to Scottie Barnes and Otto Porter Junior.

Edmonton is the lone Canadian N-H-L team in action tonight. The Oilers can rise above the .500 mark with a road victory in St. Louis. The Blues blanked the Oilers 2-0 on Saturday in Edmonton. Elsewhere, the New York Rangers host the New York Islanders and the Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Anaheim Ducks.

Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald and Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown have terminated their associations with Donda Sports, the brand management agency owned by the artist formerly known as Kanye West. The two sports stars dropped the agency owned by the music mogul now known as Ye after his latest round of offensive and antisemitic remarks.

E-S-P-N has closed a deal to sell its majority stake in the X Games and Winter X Games. That marks the end of a nearly three-decade chapter during which the network helped propel snowboarding, skateboarding and other action sports out of the fringe and into the mainstream. Terms of the sale to the private equity firm M-S-P Sports Capital were not released.

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane (verr-raan) has been ruled out until the World Cup after sustaining a hamstring injury. But United manager Erik ten Hag said today the France international could still play a part in Qatar for his country. Varane was in tears after getting hurt in his team's 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday as he feared his World Cup chances had been ended. That may not be the case. Ten Hag says it depends on “how his rehab will develop.”

A Spanish man walking from Madrid to Doha for the World Cup is believed to be under arrest in Iran where he went missing more than three weeks ago, his family said today. The parents of 41-year-old adventurer Santiago Sanchez reported him missing on October 17th. They said Spain's police and diplomats were helping the family.

 

Northstars Split Weekend home run against the Parkland Rangers

The Norman Northstars split their weekend games against the Parkland Rangers.

 

The Northstars dominated with a 6-4 victory at Saturday's Vale Night, with an almost packed house cheering them on.

 

The game on Sunday afternoon had the Rangers come out on top with a 5-4 victory.

 

The Northstars' next pair of games are this weekend against the Eastman Selects at the TRCC.

R.D. Parker Volleyball Teams in Action this Weekend

Both the Junior and Senior volleyball teams are in action this weekend.

 

The Junior boys' and girls' teams will be in The Pas today and tomorrow.

 

And the Senior boys' and girls' volleyball teams will be hosting a tournament at home.

Canadian Sports Update

The Winnipeg Jets will open their regular season as hosts to the 2-and-0 New York Rangers at Canada Life Centre today. Winnipeg will be looking to build on its 4-1and-1 in pre-season against the Eastern Conference finalist Rangers, who are coming off a 7-3 win over the Minnesota Wild last night.

Coming off a thrilling 4-3 season-opening win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, the Montreal Canadiens head to Detroit to take on the Red Wings tonight. The young Canadiens will look to be building on a solid start with another victory after going winless in pre-season play and finishing last in the N-H-L last season.

Former Supreme Court justice Thomas Cromwell recommended wholesale changes at Hockey Canada a day before the organization's C-E-O and board resigned. In a 103-page interim report, and memo, released by Hockey Canada yesterday, Cromwell told the sporting body that there is “no serious debate” its leadership has lost the confidence of important stakeholders and that calls for change will need to be answered. Hockey Canada's board resigned Tuesday but is set to remain until a new board is elected at an annual general meeting on December 17th.

The Calgary Stampeders welcome the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to McMahon Stadium tonight as they hope to leap past the B-C Lions in the West Division standings. Both tied at 10-and-5 with a tiebreaker keeping B-C ahead in second, Calgary now has its chance to finally move ahead as the Lions will have quite the test in facing the league-leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday.

The Montreal Alouettes hit the road to play the Redblacks with eyes on returning to the win column and avenging last week's 24-18 loss to Ottawa. At 7-and-8, Montreal is just two games ahead of Hamilton and has yet to clinch a playoff spot with only two more contests remaining following this week.

Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime  will be taking on eighth-seeded Brandon Nakashima in the Firenze Open quarterfinals today. The Montreal native, who is the top seed in the event, defeated Germany's Oscar Otte in three sets yesterday to move on.

Norman Northstars on Home Ice this weekend

The Norman Northstars are getting pumped up for a full C.A. Nesbitt Arena as they take on the Parkland Rangers tomorrow nigiht.

 

Tomorrow is Vale Night with the Northstars, which means free admission for everyone attending.  

 

Saturday night, 102.9 CHTM will be on hand to kick off their Winter Warmup promotion.   They will be collecting warm winter gear for kids, women and men.   New or used items can be dropped off at the entrance to CHTM representatives.     Cash donations will also be accepted.

 

Puck drop Saturday is 7:30.    On Sunday, the Northstars follow up with an afternoon game at 1:30.

 

 

 

 

Northstars Close out Exhbition Game Schedule in Teulon

The Norman Northstars wrapped up their Exhibition games with a three-game road swing on Sunday with a 2-7 loss against the Interlake Lightning in Teulon.

 

The team had two tough games against the Winnipeg Bruins on Friday and Saturday.  

 

On Friday, the Northstars went down 0-15 to the Bruins at the Southdale Community Centre.     Saturday's outing also saw the Northstars shutout, 0-9.

 

The Northstars start a three-week homestand this Saturday and Sunday against the Brandon Wheat Kings. 

 

Game time is 7:30 on Saturday and 1:30 on Sunday at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena. 

Canada's Hughes jumps 31 spots to No. 51 on world golf ranking list after title

Canada's Mackenzie Hughes jumped 31 positions to No. 51 on the official world golf ranking list Monday after winning the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Hughes, from Hamilton, beat Sepp Straka on the second hole of a playoff on Sunday to earn his second career PGA Tour victory.

The 31-year-old Canadian's previous title came at Sea Island in 2016.

Hughes cracked the top 50 for the first time last November and started the year at a career-high No. 39.

Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., is the highest-ranked Canadian at No. 28. Adam Hadwin (No. 86) of Abbotsford, B.C., and Taylor Pendrith (No. 99) of Richmond Hill, Ont., are also in the top 100.

Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., is sixth in the women's world rankings. She's the lone Canadian in the top 100.
