The Thompson Community Foundation is now accepting grant applications for this year.

Applications will be accepted from any non-profit organization with a Revenue Canada Charitable Registration Number in the city, and grants are awarded in June to worthwhile community projects completed before Dec. 1.

You can find applications on the Thompson Community Foundation’s website at ourfoundationthompson.ca. The deadline to submit applications is Friday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m.

In 2019, the Thompson Community Foundation awarded over $137, 000 in grants to twelve organizations in the city. Among them are the Boys and Girls Club of Thompson, the Juniper Centre, the Boreal Discovery Centre, and the Thompson Public Library.

A youth is facing a number of charges after being found in possession of stolen property and attempting to break into vehicles.

On Jan. 29 just before 2 a.m, the Thompson RCMP was notified of a suspicious person on Stanford Bay who was checking and trying to open vehicle doors.

Police arrived at the scene and found a 17-year-old boy who officers believed to be in possession of stolen property.

This youth was arrested and faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime and breaches of a court order.

The suspect remains in police custody.

A youth is under arrest after breaking into a home while intoxicated.

On Sunday, Jan. 26 at around 3:15, Thompson police were informed of a break and enter in progress on Grass River Drive.

RCMP arrived on the scene, and were notified by residents in the area at a 14-year-old boy was the culprit.

This youth was arrested and faces a number of charges, including Break and Enter, Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to Public Peace, Mischief under $5,000, Possession of Break-in tools or instruments, in addition to a breach of a court order.

The suspect was taken into custody, and was later released when sober to appear in court at a later date.

A body has been recovered from the remains of a fire in Thompson after police say “brave and selfless community members” rushed towards the burning home within the first few minutes to help people in danger.

Thompson RCMP say that they responded to multiple reports early Friday at Centennial Drive East about a home that was burning in the community, and that people might still be inside.

Officers assisted neighbours pull an 89-year-old woman to safety from a first-floor window, and a 61-year-old man was able to escape the home by jumping from a window.

A 21-year-old man who lived in the home was able to flee through the flames, and police say he remains in hospital in critical condition.

A 20-year-old woman remained unaccounted for, and police say a female's body whose identity has not yet been confirmed was found in the home on Saturday.

Four RCMP officers were treated for smoke inhalation sustained during their attempts to rescue the residents.

Thompson Fire and Emergency Services and RCMP were busy this morning responding to a house fire.

A statement from Fire Chief Mike Bourgon says the fire occurred on 165 Centennial Drive East, and local authorities responded at roughly 6:15 a.m on Jan. 24.

The cause of the fire is unknown, and there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities at this point.

The investigation is ongoing.

One youth is in custody after breaking into vehicles on Princeton Drive.

Early yesterday morning at around 1:18 AM, the Thompson RCMP was notified that two males were breaking into vehicles, as well as throwing rocks and smashing their windows and mirrors.

On their way to the scene, officers saw a vehicle engulfed in flames and one person running away from the fire.

Police pursued the suspect on foot, and arrested a 16-year-old near McGill Place. The youth faces multiple charges, namely arson.

A flight from Thompson to  Shamattawa First Nation crashed into a snow bank yesterday evening after it veered off the runway.

According to a statement by Perimeter Aviation, the flight left Thompson without any issues, and had a safe landing at around 5 p.m.

During the landing rollout as the plane as slowing down, the aircraft veered into the right side of the runway and into a snow bank.

The eleven passengers and two crew members were not injured in the crash.

Perimeter says it’s planning to visit Shamattawa as soon as possible to provide an update to the community, its leadership, and the passengers.

Thompson RCMP is looking for two suspects following an aggravated assault which took place on Princeton Drive last month.

On Dec. 6, local authorities were informed that a unresponsive man was discovered outside the Forest View Suites South Tower.

The victim, a 50-year-old man from Selkirk, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, and remains in hospital with serious injuries.

On Jan. 7, RCMP arrested and charged Thompson residents 32-year Donald Timothy Massan with robbery and aggravated assault, and 42-year-old Mariah Martha Baker with robbery.

Police are still searching for two suspects: 30-year-old Patrick Shamus Jackson of Thompson for robbery, and 23-year-old Jerome Montgomery Cook of Pikwitonei First Nation for robbery and aggravated assault.

The Thompson RCMP are looking for a woman wanted on a Manitoba-wide warrant.

33-year-old Sabrina Isabel Bussidor is wanted for four charges, including failing to comply with a probation order, failing to attend court, and obstruction of a peace officer.

The Thompson RCMP are seeking the public's help in finding a cash till thief.

On Jan. 14 just before 7 p.m, police were dispatched to Mark's Work Wearhouse as an unidentified man stole a till from the store. The suspect subsequently fled the store with the till.

Winterfest is back this year, and is set to take place from February 21-23rd.

The planning committee for the event will be having its first meeting this evening at 6 p.m. in the TRCC Mary Fenske Boardroom.

The city says Winterfest is the best when there is plenty of involvement from businesses and volunteers, and encourage everyone to come out and pitch ideas or help out.

The Thompson RCMP is looking for two suspect in two separate incidents concerning taxi drivers.

The first incident took place Sunday morning just after 2 a.m, when police were notified that a taxi driver was almost stabbed by an unknown male youth at the Burntwood Hotel. The driver was not injured.

The youth was located by hotel security, but fled before police arrived. The suspect was described as wearing camouflage pants, a gray sweater, and black vest jacket, and was around three feet tall and 100 pounds.

The second incident occurred later that evening after 6 p.m.

The Thompson RCMP received a complaint that a man jumped on top of a taxi while the taxi was parked at a residence on Westwood Drive.

This man then smashed the windshield of the taxi. The driver was not injured.

34-year-old Lisa Marie Donkey is wanted to failing to comply with her probation order.

Thompsonites will have an opportunity to share their ideas for the upcoming provincial budget.

Finance Minister Scott Fielding will be holding a budget consultation meeting, as the province says they welcome suggestions on how government spending and revenue should be prioritized.

They add that they’re looking for innovative ideas to save money while ensuring services are available.

The meeting will be this Monday, Jan.13 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Best Western Thompson.

Those who aren’t able to make the meeting can also contribute to the discussion by filling out an online survey at engagemb.ca.

Thompson RCMP are searching for two suspects involved in an armed robbery.

Police were notified of the armed robbery near Princeton Tower South. An investigation determined a man was robbed of his belongings by youths in possession of a machete.

Law enforcement determined 18-year-old Keathen Caillou Bradburn and 16-year-old Brayden Thomas Charlette commited this armed robbery, and both are currently wanted by Thompson RCMP.

Bradburn is described as being 5'8' and 150 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

Charlette is described as being 5'10" and 175 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

Four youths arrested following vehicle theft at Mystery Lake Hotel

Four youths were arrested following an auto theft at a local hotel.

 

On Wednesday, Jan. 8  at approximately 9:25 p.m, local police were notified of a vehicle stolen from the Mystery Lake Hotel.

 

Officers were able to locate the vehicle on Thompson Drive near Oak Street.

 

The driver, a 15-year-old youth from Thompson, along with two twelve-year-olds and a 13-year-old were all taken into custody.

 

The 15-year-old faces motor vehicle theft charge as well as breaches of a court order. The youth was also found possessing dog spray and faces additional weapons charges.

City council took the public’s advice to heart, and had a public hearing for a zoning bylaw amendment that was later passed on Monday night.

The amendment pertained to a piece of land north of the Burntwood River, which the city initially wanted to change from an Urban Hold Zone  to Residential Neighbourhood Zone for residential development.

However, during a public hearing in late October, many of the residents who attended opposed the proposal, saying the re-designation could endanger the cross country ski trails.

The city later re-worked the proposal to re-zone the land from Urban Hold to Public Recreation.

During Monday night’s hearing, all residents who spoke were in favour of it, stating the ski trails are a legacy of Thompson that should be preserved for the next generations.

The city will send an information package pertaining to the public hearing and the second reading of the bylaw amendment to the province for review, before the city can proceed with the third and final reading.

Thompson RCMP has made an arrest in a stabbing death that took place over the weekend.

On Jan. 4 at around 9 p.m, officers responded to a report of a stabbing at an apartment building on Princeton Drive.

A 30-year-old man from Leaf Rapids was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

26-year-old Ronald Dysart from Leaf Rapids was arrested on Jan 5, and has been charged with manslaughter.

Dysart has been taken into custody, and will be appearing in court later today.

Thompson RCMP are seeking the public's help in locating a suspect in a mischief case.

On Jan. 3 at approximately 8:51 PM, the Thompson RCMP received a report from Baaco's Bar and Grill that a urinal toilet had been ripped from the wall in the men's washroom.

Police are seeking to confirm the identity of the man in the middle of the photo.

Police are looking for any witnesses to this act of mischief. Operation Red Nose has released their final numbers for the holiday season.

In Thompson, the free-ride-home service gave 355 rides and had 195 people volunteer their time to help residents get to their destination safely.

Those numbers are up from last year, where Thompson gave 339 rides and had 146 volunteers.

Additionally, the Thompson committee raised over $8, 000, compared to $6, 000 from last year.

Provincially, Operation Red Nose gave over 44 hundred rides, had nearly 24 hundred people volunteer, and raised $95, 000.

The Thompson RCMP had a hectic New Years.

During a 24-hour period between noon on New Year’s Eve and New Years Day, police had 75 calls of service, with 70 of the calls coming from the city.

The detachment says 33 of the calls were received between midnight and 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

Over the past year, the Thompson Detachment responded to over 20,800 calls of service.

A 31-year-old woman from Thicket Portage is in custody following a stabbing on New Year’s Day.

The Thompson Rural RCMP detachment was dispatched to the community on Wednesday morning after 5 a.m.

The stabbing resulted in the victim being taken to Thompson General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and multiple breaches of a court order.

The investigation is ongoing.

City Centre Mall was shut down for a period of time yesterday morning, following a suspected gas leak.

A statement from Thompson's Deputy Fire Chief Steve Molloy says management staff at our local Walmart smelled what they believed to be a gas leak, and contacted Thompson Fire and Emergency Services to investigate.

A Walmart spokesperson says the building was closed just before 10 a.m.

The entire mall was evacuated as a precautionary measure. Both the fire department and propane supplier Stittco Utilities responded to the call with monitoring equipment as a part of their regular procedure.

Molloy went on to say a sweep of the building did not detect any dangerous gasses or fumes in the building.

The fire department was reported to have left the mall at approximately 10:30 yesterday morning, and mall staff and customers were allowed to re-enter the mall at around the same time.

Walmart's spokesperson apologized for any inconvenience this incident caused for customers.
