Phones, laptops and power tools are part of everyday life, but the batteries powering them can become a fire hazard.

Fire Prevention Week runs October 4th through the 10th, with a focus on rechargeable devices and safe charging.

Thompson Fire and Emergency Services Chief Dennis Benson explains what can happen when lithium-ion batteries overheat.

Benson recommends using the manufacturer-approved charger and keeping charging devices away from exits and anything that could catch fire.

The department is also hosting an open house and community barbecue at the fire hall Saturday, October 10th, from 11 until 2.
