The 5 game losing streak is over as the Flin Flon Bombers were able to ride a 39 save performance from Kenny Marquart and hold off the Humboldt Bronco's 2 to 1 on Saturday night.
Flin Flon thought they deserved a better fate the night before as they let a 2-0 lead slip away before falling 4 - 3.
The Bombers wouldn't be denied this time and played three complete periods. After a scoreless first period the Bombers jumped on the board when defenseman Nathan Schaefer was able to sneak a puck past Edouard Gauthier just outside the slot.
Schaefer gets rewarded with his first ever SJHL goal with a nice shot off the left post and in. The Bronco's came back just 32 seconds later to tie it on a powerplay goal from Jeter Korte, his second in as many nights.
The game stayed tied til early in the third when Reid Arberry was able to jump on a juicy rebound in front of the Bronco net to beat Ty Matonovich who came in to replace Gauthier who tweeked something and had to leave the game.
Flin Flon took advantage and beat Matonovich who was cold after sitting on the bench for two periods. Gauthier was putting on a clinic and made some unreal saves including one of the best glove saves I have seen in a long time on Cater Anderson.
This stood up as the game winner as Kenny Marquart did his job stopping all 12 Bronco shots in the third period to pick up his second win of the year.
The game definitely felt like a playoff atmosphere as these two long time foes always bring the best out of each other. It is a shame that will be the last time we see the Bronco's at the Whitney Forum this year.
With the changes to the schedule this year, you play teams in your division 8 times and teams outside the division 4 times. Flin Flon will travel to Humboldt for a pair of games January the 11th and 12th.
A big two points for Flin Flon who improve to 6-8-1 and sit 7 points behind the division leading Melfort Mustangs. The Bombers occupy 8th overall, 3 points behind Yorkton.
Humboldt will fall to 8-4-1 and are currently fifth overall, but only one point behind fourth place Kindersley and two points behind Weyburn and Melville for second.
The Bombers will head back to Melfort for their fourth meeting of the year on Wednesday before getting an 8 day break. The Mustangs lead the season series 2 to 1 including a 4 to 1 win in their most recent meeting back on October the 12th.
You can catch Wednesday's game on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 8:10.
