MKO is pushing back against Manitoba’s claim that open hunting areas have Indigenous support.
In a statement released Saturday, Grand Chief Garrison Settee challenged comments from Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures Minister Ian Bushie.
MKO says Misipawistik, Pimicikamak and Bloodvein First Nations have called for closures or restrictions over concerns about declining moose populations.
The organization says hunting licences are being issued without meaningful consultation.
It’s calling on Manitoba to suspend licensed moose hunting where First Nations have raised conservation concerns and work with affected communities.
