University College of the North has officially launched a new degree program aimed at strengthening Cree language education across northern Manitoba.

Grand opening celebrations for UCN’s new Bachelor in Ininimowin program were held at both its Thompson and The Pas campuses.

The program gives students the opportunity to develop proficiency in Cree while also studying local histories, cultures and worldviews through language.

Students can earn a certificate after one year, a diploma after two, or continue toward a three-year bachelor’s degree.

UCN says no previous Indigenous language experience is required, with the program designed to create more opportunities for Indigenous language learning and revitalization across the North.
