As Manitoba’s general moose hunting season opens today, a northern First Nation is asking hunters to stay out of one of its traditional hunting areas.

 

Misipawistik Cree Nation is calling for a voluntary halt to moose hunting in Game Hunting Area 10, north of Grand Rapids.

 

A provincial survey last year estimated about 281 moose in the area, including around 60 bulls.

 

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak is now backing the call, saying the area’s bull moose population has declined 53 per cent over the past 12 years.

 

MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee is urging hunters to respect the request.

 

The voluntary halt applies to all hunters, including Misipawistik members.
