A Thompson history teacher says standing where Canadian soldiers fought during the Second World War gave her a perspective that can’t be found in a textbook.
Adelola Iyawe recently returned from the Juno Beach Centre’s Summer Institute and Battlefield Tour, where she visited Juno Beach, battlefields and Canadian military cemeteries in France.
Iyawe says visiting the cemeteries and learning about soldiers from Manitoba made the experience especially powerful.
Iyawe says the experience gave her a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers and a renewed responsibility to keep their stories alive.
Adelola says she hopes to bring that experience into the classroom.
