New research is offering a clearer picture of what year-round shipping through Churchill and Hudson Bay could eventually look like.

Three studies involving Fednav Limited, the University of Manitoba and the Arctic Research Foundation found modern ice-capable vessels could technically operate through the Churchill shipping corridor throughout the year.

However, Arctic Gateway Group says year-round shipping is not starting yet.

Environmental and wildlife research, regulatory reviews and further navigation testing are still required, along with consultation with Indigenous Rights Holders and northern communities.

A longer shipping season could eventually support northern resupply and provide another route for Canadian exports to international markets.
