Skunk sightings in Thompson

Thompson residents have reported sightings of skunks inside city limits over the last couple weeks.

While it’s not common, a provincial spokesperson said skunks that are observed in the Thompson area are within their typical species range, which is extensive and covers most of Manitoba and extends north of the city.

Skunks are not dangerous other than the risk of spraying or in rare cases where the skunk is infected with rabies.

If encountered, skunks should be given plenty of space.

Slowly and quietly move away from the skunk so it is not startled.  Pets should be kept on a tight leash to ensure they don’t approach the skunk.

There is no need to report a skunk sighting to authorities, but you may wish to warn other people in the area so that they are aware of the potential for an encounter.
