Mayor Colleen reminds citizens that permits are needed to have backyard fire pits in Thompson

Backyard fire pits are popular in Thompson, but there are standards that need to be met before you fire them up.

On City Beat yesterday, Mayor Colleen Smook provided details about what is acceptable.

“Permitted firepits includes custom built firepits made out of brick, concrete blocks, masonry, and heavy gauge metal as well as manufactured pits made from metal, clay or similar material. They need to be on a non-combustible base and have a screen or a grate and fall within the measurements outlined in the by-law.”

Permits for fire pits can be completed at City Hall or the Fire Hall. It costs $79 for a permit and all fire pits must be re-inspected every year.

If you use your fire pit without having a permit,  the fine is $344 for the first offence.  Any subsequent offences are $688 each.

More details can be found in the Fee and Fine schedule at thompson.ca.
