Winter hours for waste disposal grounds start this week

As of Wednesday, the winter hours are now back in effect at the waste disposal grounds.

That means they are now only open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5:30 pm and not on Saturdays.

While some items like e-waste, hazardous waste, batteries, brush and branches are free to bring to the landfill, there are other charges, as Mayor Colleen Smook outlines here.

“Thompson residents pay eleven dollars to dispose of a truck or a trailer load of residential garbage. Fridges and air conditioners are an extra forty one dollars apiece because the Freon has to be removed. A mattress or a couch is twenty one dollars to dispose of while a love seat or recliner is eleven dollars.”

The extra charges for these items are passed along directly to the user, rather than to the tax-payers in general, as part of the processing required for these items.
