Food security programs in northern Manitoba got a boost in funding this week.
The Manitoba government announced yesterday that it’s investing 1.3 million dollars to support its Northern Healthy Foods Initiative.
Northern Relations Minister Eileen Clarke notes the organizations receiving funding include the Frontier School Division, Four Arrows Regional Health Authority, and Food Matters Manitoba.
Additionally, the province has also introduced its Affordable Food in Remote Manitoba subsidy which reduces the price of milk, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables in eligible northern communities.
Communities that are not directly serviced by an all-weather road and which do not receive the full subsidy through the federal Nutrition North Canada program are eligible for the AFFIRM program.
Selected communities include Churchill and Pukatawagan.
