Most Canadian physicians and medical learners say they would support the shift to pan-Canadian licensure.

 

The survey from the Canadian Medical Association finds respondents believe implementing a country-wide licensure for physicians would reduce barriers to mobility and improve access to patient care.

 

Currently, physicians are required to have individual medical licenses in each respective province or territory where they practice.

 

That means a physician can’t easily travel to another province to help a colleague or provide care for patients in need if they don’t have a license to practice there.

 

75 per cent of physicians believe a pan-Canadian licensure system would improve access to health care in rural, remote, and northern communities.
