Number COVID-19 variant cases in Winnipeg continues to grow

Manitoba Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin reported 50 new cases of COVID-19 this afternoon, bringing the five day test positivity rate to 4.8 percent.

Roussin reported no new deaths but did report an increase in variants of concern.

He says a further 18 confirmed cases of B.1.1.7 COVID variant of concern have been detected one of which is from Interlake Eastern health region, and 17 from Winnipeg health region so case investigations are continuing. That brings the total number of variants of concern cases that are confirmed to 41.

Roussin added eight of the new variant cases are related to travel, with the others related to contacts so their contact tracing is being stepped up.

Of the new COVID cases, 31 are in the Winnipeg region, 16 in Northern Health, three in Southern Health and zero in the other two regions.

Of the total 32, 793 reported cases, 908 are active, 30, 968 individuals have recovered, and 151 are in hospital with 23 in intensive care.
