City's Extreme Cold Weather Policy Heavily Used in 2018-2019

The 2018-2019 winter season was the busiest in terms of the City of Thompson’s extreme cold weather policy being implemented.

 

It comes into effect when temperatures reach -35 with the wind chill factor and the Homeless Shelter is at capacity.

 

This year, there were 52 days when the policy was in effect, with 41 of those days in January and February combined.

 

In all, a total of 164 individuals were housed at the ice skating shelters overnight.

 

The extreme cold weather policy was created in 2013 and runs from November 1st to March 31st of each year.

 

Below are the monthly breakdowns for 2018-2019:

 

In December it was activated 6/31 days. 11 males and 3 females utilized the facility. Temperatures ranged from -35 Celsius to -47 Celsius. (With wind chill factor).

 

In January it was activated 21/31 days. 38 males and 18 females utilized the facility. Temperatures ranged from -33 Celsius to – 55 Celsius. (With wind chill factor).

 

In February it was activated 20/28 days. 46 males and 14 females utilized the facility. Temperatures ranged from -33 Celsius to -49 Celsius. (With wind chill factor).

 

In March it was active 2/31 days. 13 males and 4 females utilized the facility. Temperatures ranged from – 32 Celsius to -39 Celsius. (With wind chill factor).

 

122 males and 42 females utilized the cold weather policy with a total of 164 individual
