Ashton: CRTC Report Says Telecom Companies Misleading Canadians

Ottawa needs to step up to the plate when it comes to protecting consumers rights.

That’s according to our MP, Niki Ashton.

In a recent report, Ashton says that consumers in our region have even less choice now with the acquisition of MTS by Bell, and that the sale was approved by the federal government despite objections about how the move lessened competition.

She says that on top of that, a recent report from the Canadian and Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission shows that phone and internet companies are using aggressive and misleading marketing tactics at the expense of consumers.

She says that the report also reveals the unfair practices of 12 Canadian service providers which significantly impacted vulnerable members of society such as seniors, people with disabilities, and people whose first language is not English or French.

The NDP caucus is calling on Ottawa to launch an investigation into how the rights and privacy of citizens has been violated.

Ashton concludes by saying that it’s time for Ottawa to act to protect consumers
