Use Of Force Deemed Necessary And Reasonable During July Arrest In Nelson House

The officers involved in a July arrest in Nelson House will not be facing charges.

That’s the conclusion of the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba following an investigation into the arrest of a 20-year-old in the community.

On July 28th, RCMP officers were called to a home in Nelson House to deal with an intoxicated and aggressive family member who was armed with a knife.

While responding to the call, one officer used his baton to strike the man once in the hand that held the knife before the suspect was arrested under the mental health act.

The strike from the baton resulted in a fracture to the suspect’s right hand, though the investigation found that the use of force was both necessary and reasonable in the circumstances.

The suspect told the police watchdog during the investigation that he had little recollection of the incident as he had been drinking heavily.
