Province To Look At Bill That Would End Daylight Saving Time In Manitoba

Daylight saving time could soon be a thing of the past here in Manitoba.

November saw the first reading of bill to amend the Official Time Act, which if passed into law would see clocks here in the province not change after November.

According to Bill 205, which was introduced by now independent Emerson MLA Cliff Graydon, daylight saving time is associated with a decrease in productivity the day after clocks are turned forward, with no corresponding increase in productivity when clocks are turned back.

The bill goes on to say that the loss of sleep associated with the start of daylight saving time has serious consequences for physical and mental health and has been linked to increases in traffic accidents and workplace injuries.

The piece of legislation concludes by saying that there is no conclusive evidence that daylight saving time is effective in reducing energy consumption.

The fourth session of the 41st legislature is set to resume in March.
