The Canada Safety Council is reminding water sport enthusiasts to be safe this summer.
Communications Coordinator Lynn Lau says they are encouraging people to wear lifejackets: "Drowning is one of the more preventable sources of injury and death and we know that Canadians still aren’t really wearing their lifejackets. A lot of people do get involved in the boating, there isn’t a lot of awareness about how important it is to wear your lifejacket".
In Manitoba, between 2007 and 2011 there were 28 boating related deaths and only 2 of those 28 were wearing lifejackets.
