Manitoba-born Zach Whitecloud takes on Jets as part of NHL playoffs

A Manitoba-born First Nations hockey player is set to return to his home province this weekend as the Winnipeg Jets take on the Vegas Golden Knights in the first round of Stanley Cup playoffs.

Zach Whitecloud and the Golden Knights tied the series at 1-1 after their 5-2 win over the Jets last night.

Whitecloud is from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, west of Brandon.

The 26-year-old defenceman has been with the Vegas team since 2018.

Whitecloud says the support he has received from the community has played a large role in the success he has achieved.

Chief Jennifer Bone says Sioux Valley doesn't have a dedicated hockey program but it takes great pride in providing financial support for members who play in nearby communities.

Whitecloud spent his childhood cheering for the Jets and says he's well-prepared for what awaits his team when they play at the Canada Life Centre on Saturday.

He added it should be a fun place to play but will not let the atmosphere or crowd distract him.
