Canadian Sports Update

The Toronto Blue Jays will be heading to Tampa to take on the Rays in a four-game series beginning tonight. Toronto lost 4-3 to the Philadelphia Phillies in extra innings in the finale of a two-game series last night. Jose Berrios will take the mound for the Blue Jays which currently sit two games ahead of the Rays in the American League wild-card race.

Canada's women's basketball team earned a solid 67-60 win over the 10th-ranked Serbians to open their F-I-B-A World Cup basketball tournament. The fourth-ranked Canadians welcomed back Kia Nurse who had missed almost a year due to a torn A-C-L in her knee. Nurse recorded nine points in 19 minutes. Canada next plays France tomorrow.

The House of Commons heritage committee ordered another round of hearings into Hockey Canada's handling of sexual assault allegations yesterday. Interim board of directors chair Andrea Skinner has been ordered to testify at the October 4th hearing, as well as former chair Michael Brind'Amour and former president and C-E-O Bob Nicholson. It will be the first time each of the three will testify.

Canada Soccer's general secretary Earl Cochrane said the organization made a new offer to its players on Tuesday in a bid to resolve their ongoing contract standoff. The previous offer from Canada Soccer had been made in late June. The men's team is headed to Qatar for the World Cup which kicks off November 20th.

Top-seeded Brad Gushue will compete in the first round of the men's draw at the PointsBet Invitational curling event today in Frederiction, New Brunswick. Yesterday, Jennifer Jones and her new-look team picked up a 9-5 win over Andrea Kelly, while top seed Kerry Einarson beat Tracey Larocque 12-3. Brendan Bottcher also won with his new team in the men's draw.

Canada's Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith will be competing in the Presidents Cup golf tournament as a part of the international team today in Charlotte, North Carolina. Conners will partner with South Korea's Sungjae (sung-JAY') Im against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in the second match of the first round. Pendrith will team up with Chile's Mito Pereira against Tony Finau and Max Homa in the fifth match of the day.
