Goldeyes Drop Opener Against AirHogs

The Winnipeg Goldeyes returned home last night to open a seven game home stand, starting with a three game series against the Texas AirHogs.

The AirHogs got out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to the first of two RBI’s from shortstop Beamer Weems, and never looked back. Texas would add a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead before winning the game 4-1.

Roman Gomez picked up the win for the AirHogs, pitching six strong innings, allowing only three hits while striking out three. Right hander Jacob Morris came in in relief in the seventh inning allowing one run on four hits. El Paso, TX native Josh Blanco picked up the save in the ninth.

David Bergin drove in the only run of the game for the Goldeyes, as Andrew Sohn scored as a result of a Bergin single in the bottom of the eighth.

Zach Nuding got the start for Winnipeg, giving up four runs (two earned) en route to his third loss of the season. Josh Laxer, Mitchell Lambson, Kenny Matthews and Victor Capellan all came out of the bullpen for a combined four shutout innings.

The Goldeyes still sit second in the American Association North Division, 0.5 games back of the St Paul Saints. The record on the season sits at 14-9.
