City Council Approves First Reading Of Amendment To Business Licensing By-Law

You shouldn’t be surprised if the City’s proposed definition of hobbyist or artisan is tweaked before the by-law amendment comes back to Council for its second and third readings.

The first reading passed at the last meeting despite some pushback from Councillor Jeff Fountain, who pointed out that the wording leaves out a few artists and artist groups and that it should go back to committee for changes.

Deputy Mayor Kathy Valentino agreed with Fountain, adding though that this was only the first reading and that she will ask for the amendment to go back to committee to be changed further before the second and third readings.

The definition, as it currently stands in the amendment, classifies a hobbyist or artisan as one who makes hand made goods produced by themselves, or their immediate family, and offers them for sale.

The amendment was brought to council as a separate fee exists in the fee and fine schedule for hobbyists and artisans, though there is currently no wording in the business by-law to define the groups.
