The Thompson Local News

Six-time Olympic medalist Clara Hughes is in Thompson today as the guest speaker for the Hope North Evening of Hope.

Hughes' talk is being called "Open Heart, Open Mind", which is also the title of her book. She will be talking about her own battle with depression, as well as how we can break the stigma surrounding mental illness and encouraging open dialogue.

Hughes, a native of Winnipeg, told 102.9 CHTM that the farthest north she's been in the province is Flin Flon, so she's looking forward to experiencing Thompson. She also added that she heard about all the snow we got last week, and is excited to see what the snow looks like in our community.

She said that the best advice she has received with regards to mental illness is no advice at all, and just to listen.

The event will get underway at 7:00 at the Letkemann Theatre at R.D. Parker.

Admission to the event is free and as a community event, everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Are you concerned about forest fires in our area?
Yes. It's so dry and we're surrounded by trees.
Not really. One good rain and we'll be fine.
