Provinces Declines Grant; City Forced to Pay More Than $1 Million on WTP Transfer

The response wasn't a good one by City council after the Provincial Government declined to grant a remission of sales and land transfer tax when the city takes over the water treatment plant from Vale.

Most councilors went one by one showing their displeasure about the decision which will cost the city almost a million and half dollars in taxes.

Deputy Mayor Kathy Valentino says the length in time that it took for their decision to be made was alarming. It took around 18-20 months for the decision to be made.

Councilor Dennis Foley says the decision given by the province is hypocritical saying that the government will not help the city out during a period of hardships.

The government said that the tax policy applies to entities that were established by the province, which the Plant was not.
