Order of Thompson awarded to Ted Smook

This year's recipient of the Order of Thompson was announced Saturday night at the Thompson Community Foundation's 7th annual gala.    Ted Smook is the fifth Thompson resident to receive the award.

Smook,  who  along with his brothers, owned Smook Brothers Contractors for around 30 years before selling it in 2010, was praised for his commitment to doing things right.    Mayor Tim Johnston and Peter Paulic of Smook Contractors  provided some background on Smook and his involvement in the city as both a businessman and a philanthropist.

The Order of Thompson recognizes people that have made a positive impact on the city, through a combination of volunteerism, community spirit and philanthropy.   Upon receiving his award Smook was quick to thank his family members for their support in making his life a dream and the award a reality.

Smook joins Volker Beckmann, Gail and Arnold Morberg, Red Sangster, and Adrian DeGroot as recipients of the award.

The Thompson Community Foundation is a "savings account" for our community, using revenue generated from managed funds to provide grants to worthwhile community projects.   In the past year, they've given over 76-thousand dollars in grants.   Since its inception 18 years ago, the TCF has granted over 823-thousand dollars to local organizations.    They also provide scholarships and bursaries to students.
