Thompson rallies together to save door to door mail delivery

A town hall meeting took place this past weekend to speak about saving Canada Posts door to door service.

MP Niki Ashton was there via video message; The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, People First Manitoba, the City of Thompson and Steve Ashton MLA for Thompson were all in attendance.

Issues brought up about community mail boxes included traffic congestion, snow clearing, where the boxes would be put and what will happen to the postal workers jobs.

Gord Fisher, National Director for the Prairie Region of The Canadian Union of Postal Workers was there to speak.

Fisher says if CP ends this service 15,000 workers will be out of a job.

Kristopher Blake with People First Manitoba said during the meeting 1 in 6 Manitobans have a disability making door to door service essential.

Canada Post was invited to the meeting, but did not intend. If approved Thompson would see the end to home to home delivery in 5-6 years.
