It's time to check your hair for head lice

With the start of school that means the possibility of head lice. Edith-Rose Cairns, Communicable Disease Control Coordinator for the Northern Health Regional says parents should be checking their kids head every week.

If your child does end up with lice, lice shampoo can be bought at the local pharmacy. The medication needs to go through your hair twice and for 14 days after parents are recommended to check and clean the nits out of the hair with a lice comb. As well it’s important to wash clothing, bedding and bathroom essentials in hot water.

Parents should take the time and sit down with their children and explain the bugs. Cairns says kids should be taught not to share personal clothing along with hair pins and brushes and that having lice does not mean someone is not clean.
