David Harper survives non-confidence vote

Grand Chief David Harper survived a non-confidence vote yesterday, allowing him to stay on as the head of the MKO.

Seven chiefs of Manitoba’s northern first nations voted in favour of removing Harper from office, while 15 voted for him to stay.

Mathias Colmb Chief Arlen Dumas was not pleased in the result. Dumas called the non-confidence vote, accusing Harper of refusing to cooperate with auditors called in to examine the agency’s books more than a year ago. Dumas said the main reason Harper survived the vote is because Harper hasn’t given the auditor any of the documents requested, and therefore the auditor told chiefs Tuesday he couldn’t draw any conclusions.

Harper couldn’t be reached for comment though he said earlier he was “pretty confident” he would survive the vote and that he had done nothing wrong.
